Located at the northern end of the Cotentin region, Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is a Normandy town with a rich heritage. Well-known for its economic and military past, this place steeped in history has earned it the name “Port of the Americas”.

It’s also thanks to this geographic advantage that Cherbourg boasts the second largest artificial harbor in the world.
What to see and do in Cherbourg
Of course, Cherbourg is a great place to visit for history buffs, but it’s not the only one! Visitors can, for example, visit the Cité de la merwhere they can explore the “Le Redoutable” submarine. As for art lovers, works by great masters from the 15th to the 20th century await them at the Thomas Henry Museum.
In Cherbourg, visitors can climb to the top of the Roule hill for a superb view of the harbor and surrounding area. But it’s also here that you can visit the not-to-be-missed Liberation Museum. Both a fortress and a museum, the museum traces the history of the Second World War in Cherbourg.
Going back even further in time, discover the port city’s ecclesiastical monuments, such as the flamboyant Basilique Sainte-Trinité (15th and 16th centuries) and theAbbaye du Voeu, built in the Middle Ages as a barracks and hospital. This religious heritage is complemented by the famous Château des Ravalet and its 10-hectare gardens.
