Visit Avranches from the campsite
Once a bishopric, Avranches stands out from other towns in La Manche for its rich medieval and religious heritage. This “little town” near our Manche campsite is full of charm, and is closely associated with the famous Mont Saint-Michel. It’s also a particularly pleasant place to stroll, admiring its stone facades and gardens.
Just a 20-minute drive from Les Chevaliers de Malte campsite will take you to Avranches and the adjoining Mont-Saint-Michel bay, both of which are well worth a visit.
What to see and do in Avranches
Associated with Mont St-Michel, Avranches is home to the Musée des Manuscrits du Mont-Saint-Michel. This scriptorial is an invitation to travel back in time through the making of manuscripts and the tools used by Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages to create their spiritual and artistic works. So it’s hardly surprising that it’s been dubbed the “City of Manuscripts”!
Continuing your visit to this heritage from another era, the Basilique Saint-Gervais d’Avranches and theÉglise Notre-Dame-des-Champs d’Avranches also open their doors to you.
Don’t miss the Château d’Avranches and its keep. Built in the Middle Ages, the remains of this fortress make for a pleasant stroll while admiring the panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
After the Middle Ages, it’s time for the Renaissance! During the summer months, the Château des Montgommery opens its doors to those wishing to step back in time to the 17th century, with free tours during the day, guided tours at night and even an investigation game. Finally, to end your visit with a bucolic break, visit the Jardin des Plantes d’Avranches and its belvedere. Take a stroll through the lush greenery that inspired writers such as Guy de Maupassant.
